There are not one but many reasons on why we all should use more clothes made from hemp than cotton.

Cannabis is not only beneficial for medical use but also in textile industry. Hemp is used in making clothes, ropes, bags, shoes etc. The question here is that whether hemp fabric has any extra benefits or is any different than the other fabric materials we are using for making clothes and everything else. Well the answer is YES. There are more than one benefits of using hemp fabric when compared to any other fabric. Let’s take cotton as an example because cotton is the most used material for making clothes.


Cotton
  • Requires 1400 gallons of water for every pound or you can say about 9.7 liters of water to grow 1 kg of fiber.
  • Production of cotton worldwide takes up about 25% of the world’s pesticides use.
  • The use of too much chemicals and pesticides to grow cotton pollutes the land and water bodies around it.
  • When washed cotton fibre breaks down easily which reduce their life.


Hemp
  • Requires about the half the amount of water than cotton or 2.1 liters of water to grow 1 kg of fibre.
  • Hemp does not require any type of pesticides or chemicals to grow.
  • Hemp can be grown on the same land for 14 years without doing any damage to land and water and produce 200%-250% more fibre in the same amount of land compared to cotton.
  • Hemp fibre does not break as easily as cotton fibre does which results in longer life. Hemp fibre are almost 4X more durable than cotton fibre.

These are some of the many factors to proof that hemp fabric is better that cotton fabric. There are few company in the market which produce hemp clothes but they are not usually 100% pure hemp fabric.
